What is a good first electric guitar?

I have been playing on an acoustic guitar for a couple months, and i am pretty good, but i want an electric. I am getting one for my birthday, but i'm not sure what kind to ask for. I am thinking of an epiphone, or a Fender Strat, but i dont know if those are good. Please Help with suggestions. Are brand names better or is it just for the brand name (Squier-Fender)
