The Crucible by Arthur Miller.?

Could someone please tell me what was going on in Arthur Miller's time when he wrote The Crucible? I think it would help me better understand hidden meanings and the central theme. I'm not so sure if it will help me with symbolism and ironic devices? But that's what I need to know to complete my ELA's this week. Thanks.
